Matching Sets: An Edit

This month marks 6 months of quarantine and working from home. I worked from home before COVID, but even then I’d work in coffee shops or my co-working space. Now that I work from home 100% of the time with no end in sight, I’ve decided to invest in some cute loungewear sets.

This is a trend I am very into right now. While I love being cozy and comfortable, I still want to feel cute and put together. I also don’t want to think too hard about it. So I love the idea of these sets being like a work from home uniform. Just throw on a cute set and go!

I’ve tried quite a few from Aerie and Free People — lots of hits and some misses. I'm sharing stock photos here because they showcase the clothes best, but you can check out my clothing try-on highlight on Instagram to see my live try-on of all of these!

Aerie

Aerie Sunday Soft Retro Gym Short + Cropped Crew Sweatshirt — This was the first cozy set I picked up, and I have it in both Raw Sienna and Smoked Grey. They are sold separately. The shorts are a classic stretchy waistband sweat short. They are high rise with an elasticated waist, and hit me about mid-thigh. I love the longer shorts length for lounging around the house. The sweatshirt is a cropped crew-neck style with a loose fit. I got the shorts in small. They run large but I wanted roomier shorts. I got the sweatshirt in large because I wanted it to be drapey and, while I do like the cropped style, I didn’t want to show midriff while wearing the set together. The arms are a bit long, but I just fold them over and they look cute that way. It has a front pocket and raw hems on the arms and on the bottom.

The fabric on both of these is a thinner sweatshirt material (no fuzzy inside lining like other sweatshirts). It’s super soft and I suspect will only get softer with more wear. I purchased Raw Sienna first, then liked it so much that I picked it up in Smoked Grey.

The top and bottom are purchased separately. These come in a variety of colors, which seem to go in and out of stock quite often. So, keep an eye out even if you don't see it in your size right now.

Free People

Free People sizes tend to run large. Because these are loungewear pieces , I decided to keep them all in size small, even though they have an oversized feel to them. Also a few of these are made of cotton, so I wanted to be prepared in case they shrink a bit. I wanted them to comfortable and loose-fitting, for the most part.

Carry On Set in Black and Papaya Sun — The Carry On Set is a loose-fit crop tank top with a pair of culotte pants. The tank top is a boxy cut that is low cut on the underarms, so you will probably want to wear a bralette underneath. The pants have a stretchy pull-on waist with a thick waistband and belt loops. The pants have two deep pockets and one back pocket on the right side. On my 5’3 frame, the pants hit right above my ankle.

I’m keeping this set in Black and I’m returning the set in Papaya Sun, though I really liked it too! My mom is ordering the Papaya Sun set in medium.

Golden Sands Three Piece Set in Black — Pictured here in the Drying Palms color (also gorgeous!).I love the idea of this three piece set, but unfortunately it was comically long and oversized on me. I could see this being super cute/drapey on a taller person. The pants are a wide leg, loose fit with a high-waisted, stretchy waist band. The sweater is also oversized. It is long (covers my butt) and the sleeves are long and drapes. The cardigan was mid-calf length on me and had a waist tie strap. It’s made of a tight knit, lightweight fabric that I think would transition into fall and winter nicely.

I’m returning this set, but my mom actually loved the oversized element and asked me to order this in a Medium for her.

Hailee Sweater Set in Untold Gold and Aloha Lilac — This set is a perfect for autumn/winter because it's made of a really nice, medium weight knit fabric. The drapey top is a scoop neck with raglan sleeves and wooden button detailing. The bottoms are high waisted pull ons with an elasticated band that cut off above my ankles.

The knit fabric flatters the body really nicely, but also feels like you’re wearing a knit blanket. In the best way. Untold Gold is a stunning golden-y olive, and Aloha Lilac is more of a muted lilac. I know I’ll get a ton of wear out of both of these through fall and winter. My mom also ordered the Untold Gold set in medium!

Kim Hemp Lounge Set in Tobacco — I saw my sister-in-law wearing this set and I had to have it. It’s a super oversized tee with bike shorts. The t shirt has a front pocket. I love them both separately, but even more together. They are both made of a heavier-weight cotton. The shorts are a super high rise (like rib-cage rise), with a 9.25 inseam for size small. I probably could have gotten this in an XS, but I love the super oversized feel of these.

By the way, my SIL is pregnant and this looks adorable on her, so it seems maternity friendly. Definitely keeping!

Wander Set in Sage Light — This is the most lightweight set of everything I tried on. It’s a super soft, thin cotton jersey fabric. The top is a cropped turtleneck tank, and the bottoms are harem-style parents with an elastic band and a fold-over detail. They taper out around the legs, then pinch in loosely around the ankled. There’s a front seam detailing on both legs that is actually super flattering! The top is a turtleneck, but it's very drapey and loose. This set does show some midriff.

I found this set to be the most summery of the bunch, and the most flattering for my hourglass figure. I also love the sage light color — it’s a super light, desaturated sage color, but not quite pastel either. I’m keeping it!

Side bar, I wore the Wander Set in Sage Light this weekend in Del Mar for a beachy vacation day, and it was perfect!
